How to Master the Beginning

Doctoral students

To work on a dissertation for several years at a time demands a wide range of skills from you. Of course, it is first and foremost about the topic for which the researcher is burning. At the same time, however, it is also important to find routine and a rhythm in the new tasks and to motivate yourself again and again. In communication with the supervisors, you should and must stand up for your own interests. At the same time, you ask yourself what will happen professionally after the dissertation and how you can successfully distinguish yourself during this time.

I offer coaching and workshops for doctoral students on the following topics:

Self-motivation and self-management

Topics

  • How to finish your dissertation without losing your head
  • Learning agile methods of time and self-management
The exact content and topics of the coaching are always based on the individual needs of the client.

Communication and networks

Topics

  • Self-marketing: Recognising, valuing
    and communicating competences
  • How to: networking – Together we are less alone!

The exact content and topics of the coaching are always based on the individual needs of the client.

Karriere

Topics

  • …and what will you do afterwards? Career paths inside and outside science
  • What can I do? What do I want? Making good career decisions

The exact content and topics of the coaching are always based on the individual needs of the client.

Self-motivation & self-management

Whether you are a doctoral student in a graduate programme or working on your own, you may come to a point where your current resources are not sufficient to keep you going. Together we reflect on the time and self-management approaches you have already used successfully, discuss what you might need in addition and also take a look “behind the scenes”. Are there issues that are particularly important alongside your doctorate and that tie up your energy and attention? How do you deal with stress and high demands and how do you take good care of yourself?

Communication & Networks

Female scientists and researchers often find it particularly difficult to talk about their work. After all, it is taken for granted that one works well and enthusiastically. But how do others find out about it? Good self-marketing helps you get noticed, make connections with other researchers and thus expand your network. Whether you use digital marketing such as a personal website, blog, podcast or social networks and how you present yourself at conferences and networking events is something we work out in communication coaching.

Career

During the doctorate, there is not much time and energy left for the strategic consideration of a career path within science. Coaching offers the opportunity to shed light on your career to date and to review your motivation for the academic career path you have chosen. You notice during the doctoral period that your wishes have changed regarding the industry in which you would like to work? In career coaching, we specify your strengths and skills, work out alternatives to your previous path and “translate” them into other sectors. If desired, this can also include the revision of application documents and application training.
